U2 songs that name check real people

U2 songs that refer to real people
Here's a few songs where Bono was named checked real people in his song lyrics. There's also a few songs where the lyrics a talking about a real person but they are not directly named.
A song about singer Billie Holiday, Bono was trying to throw the kitchen sink at this song, referencing all kinds of musical figures including John Coltrane and Miles Davis.
One Tree Hill
Bono name dropped Victor Jara in this song that is really popular in NZ for some reason.....
"And in our world a heart of darknessA firezone where poets speak their hearts
Then bleed for it Jara sang his song a weapon
In the hands of love
You know his blood still cries from the ground"
This verse is referring to how Victor Jara was executed for his political disssent and thus became a symbol of the struggle for human rights.
Elvis Ate America
This is possibly the U2 lyric that refers to the most people Lisa Marie Presley Chuck D, Johnny Cash all feature with shout outs to Hitler, Nixon, Christ, Mishima, Markus and Micheal Jackson. Bono would later refer to Jackson in Pop's The Playboy Mansion as well.
God Part II
This song was intended as a sequel to John Lennon's song called God. Lennon's song refers to things he didn't believe in such as war and The Beatles - Bono's version also refers to things that he also doesn't believe in but also goes on to refer to how angry he was at the author Albert Goldman who wrote an unflattering biography of Lennon (and also a controversial biography of Elvis, and given U2's love of Elvis, I'm not surprised Bono made the reference).
Pride
"For the Reverend Martin Luther King, sing". Pride was inspired the the civil rights activist - that particular line comes from the live version of Pride on Rattle and Hum.
Stand Up Comedy
References the famous French soldier Napoleon and his wife Josephine...
Peace on Earth
Inspired by the Real IRA Omagh bombing in Northern Ireland on 15 August 1998. The song lists the names of people killed in the bombing. Similarly, inspiration for the lyric, "She never got to say goodbye / To see the colour in his eye / Now he's in the dirt" comes from the funeral of Barker, another victim of the bombing. Other bomb victims named were Sean, Julia, Gareth, Anne, and Brenda.
Dirty Day
Whilst not directly referenced but the liner notes of Zooropa showed the song was dedicated to Charles Bukowski.

Dave Grohl Fan Letter
Shortly before the Foo Fighters played their gig in Auckland, Dave Grohl wrote a fan letter... to his fans....
Dave here. It's been quite a while since I've sat down to write something for you guys, but as we're coming to the end of an amazing tour and an amazing year, I figured I'd take this opportunity to say thank you....
Where do I begin?
Thank you all for making "Wasting Light" the most incredible album experience of our band's 17 year history. For real. The fact that a rock and roll record, made in a garage, completely analog to tape with no help from computers, could be a #1 album around the world, AND get a Grammy nomination for "Album of the Year".....well....these days that's no small feat. It's truly inspiring, and it makes us feel like the luckiest band in the world. So thanks. It means everything to us.
And the shows......from the secret club gigs, to playing in peoples garages all over the country.....from the arenas to the festivals to the stadiums....we've had the best gigs of our lives. Thank you so much to each and every one of you who came out and spent those 2 hours and 45 minutes with us every night. It's been exhausting.....but it's been a blast.
Looking back at the past 18 months, I don't think we've ever worked so hard at making an album, and it ever being so easy. From day one, the idea for this record was to make something completely simple and honest, to capture that thing that happens when you put the 5 of us in a small room. No big production, just real rock and roll music: That's why we decided to do it in my garage. We wanted to retain that human element, keep all of those beautiful imperfections: That's why we went completely analog. And, most of all, we wanted it to sound huge: That's why we decided to use Butch Vig. His role in this whole experience is huge, and he deserves a great 'thanks', too. Not many producers would accept the challenge that we handed him. He's the best, for sure. Together, we made the album of a lifetime. Again.
And to all of you.....we're not finished yet. There are still more shows to play, more songs to write, more albums to record, for years to come. I mean.....If you would have told me 17 years ago that in 2012 I would be writing songs for our 8th studio album....well.....
If it weren't for you guys, we wouldn't be here. We owe you so much.
Take care of yourselves.
We'll see you out there, folks.

Foo Fighters New Zealand Set List & Reviews
Foo Fighters Set List Auckland New Zealand
Wasting Light Tour
Western Springs
December 13 2011
This was the second show that the Foo Fighters have played in NZ this year after they generously played a benefit gig to support the people of Christchurch following the dreadful earthquake.
The Herald's review said "While it's taken 17 or so years, the Foo Fighters are now a stadium-sized rock band and the near 45,000 people at Western Springs are testament to it. Not many bands have the pulling power to play the Springs these days."
"Tenacious D - the duo of actor and
comedian Jack Black and guitarist Kyle Glass (who joined the Foo Fighters for
the encore) - were the comedy show before the main event. And as Black joked,
if Ten D are the thunder, the Foos were the lightning."
Stuff reported in their review "And around 50,000 fans did fill it, stretching up into the tops of the slippery banks, and belted the well-known songs back at the band. They weren't forgotten by Grohl who had the two sections of the crowd sing to each other towards the end of the show.
The crowd lit up further when Grohl announced the band was filming a live video at the concert to go with the new single These Days - dubbed by the singer his favourite he has written.
For two hours and 45 minutes the Foos were relentless.
Older tunes and new were received with equal enthusiasm, with the new album Wasting Light having been out long enough now to avoid the inevitable restlessness for their old hits that bands touring with new material often have to overcome."

Wasting Light Tour
Popular Aussie radio station Triple M gave the Foo's a fairly decent review "Dave Grohl gave pause 13 songs in to celebrate real music made by guitars, drums and bass, to thank the audience for coming out to a rock show – and said, 'if one of your favourite bands comes to town and they’ve got a computer behind them – tell them your friend Dave said this'... as the band launched into a full-on, rockin' "Monkey Wrench"."
