Meatload Auckland Review and Set List 2011

Following a fun but flawed Wellington gig and a 'postponed' Tauranga show - Meat Loaf and the Neverland Express arrived at the Vector Arena in Auckland to deliver the hits and perhaps show how good the great guy can actually be.

When: 29 October 2011
Where: Vector Arena, Auckland, New Zealand

The reviews are in and they are kind of kind:

Auckland Now's review was quite friendly:

"After opening with Rocky Horror's Hot Patootie - Bless My Soul, the singer swaggered around the stage doing his best to rock out, his age and health obviously restricting his performance.

Meat Loaf's voice isn't what it used to be and he's certainly aware of it. The singer didn't let that get in the way of giving his all, however it was hard to hear the singer during almost the entire show - a combination of age and the band's overpowering instruments no doubt.

After half an hour the show hit a road block with an awkward lull. Taking a few minutes to chat and share a few career anecdotes, Meat soon had the audience back on side and threw himself into some of his biggest hits with You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth and Bat Out of Hell, accompanied by a gigantic blow-up bat of course."

"The audience said it all, really: Hundreds of seats were empty well before the encore even began. Many punters, it seems, were put out over the singer's inability to replicate his golden years. But all that really shows is the lack of appreciation some folk have for an entertainer who has worked for almost 45 years."

Meat Loaf Review and Set List Wellington New Zealand

Glory Days
Meat Loaf Review and Set List Wellington New Zealand

26 October

TSB Arena, Queens Wharf

Opening act: Luga Boa

Fresh from a stint in Australia where Meat Loaf learned aussie rules fans just don't fucking get him, Meat Loaf and his band of truly talented players hit Wellington for a one night only show.

Meat is 64 years old and in ill health with a voice that's had better days. And he knows it so he plays with that and makes it a part of his set to good effect with fun humour - his band thus has to carry him a fair way but the Neverland Express is a great ride.

Patti Russo shines as his foil for so many of the vocals - and as when I saw Meat Loaf in the same venue in 1997 (?) the highlight was her efforts during Paradise By The Dashboard Light. For some strange reason I liked it when she kicked Meat in the balls.

Generally speaking, fans go to see Meat Loaf play classics from Bat Out of Hell and the odd hit from his comback years in the late 90s. So we got a rocking Bat out of Hell that featured some absolutely dire vocals, an excellent Rock and Roll Dreams and a pretty damn good Too Out Of Three Aint Bad.

Three songs from Hang Cool Teddy Bear were played all in a row to good effect - and as they were recently recorded Meat Loaf's live vocals filled those songs well.

To counter Meat's fragile health, the band plays loud and does plenty of musical interludes to let the big fella rest up a little (kind of reminds of what Axl Rose does these days!) - the violin and piano duel during Aint Bad was a great example and a fine piece of musician ship.

Meat Loaf was brilliant as he played up to the crowd, cracking jokes and rambling through a story about acid and teletubbies which made no sense until the end of the show when we were visited by actual Teletubbies and Alice in Wonderland characters. It only makes sense if you don't want peace on Earth and were actually there.

A fine night out was had by the crowd - their sing alongs showed it and despite the shortcomings, Meat Loaf proved once again he is a great showman and entertainer.

Hang Cool Teddy Bears.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds Set list Debut

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds Set list Debut

Noel Gallagher played his first ever solo show with his group High Flying Birds at Olympia Theatre, Dublin, Ireland on October 2. Quite the historical night really - it was Noel's first set list since the demise of Oasis and it featured a wise selection of Oasis singles and b-sides mixed with his new songs from his debut album (which went number one in the UK and Irish charts this week - promptly outselling Liam's Beady Eye record).

I would imagine it was with a very deliberate action that Noel's song choice to open his set was (It's Good) To Be Free - a sure reference to the solo road he has taken.

Stone Roses announce they are a band again

Stone Roses announce they are a band again.. how long will it last?

A reformed Stone Roses never seemed likely - they seemed to hate each other in  - and it took the death of Mani's mother to put it all in perspective. Not to mention the thought of all the cash a tour will rake in ;)

From Stuff

'The Stone Roses, one of the best-loved and most influential bands to emerge from Britain's 'Madchester' scene, announced Tuesday that they are reuniting and working on new material.

The band members, who split in 1996 after releasing two albums, said they will play two shows in their hometown of Manchester on June 29 and 30, followed by an international tour.

"Our plan is to take on the world," said singer Ian Brown as the band announced its reunion at a London news conference.

"It's not a trip down memory lane," he added. "We are doing new songs."

Formed by Brown and guitarist John Squire, the band's self-titled 1989 debut album was a huge British hit. But fans waited five years for the followup, Second Coming, and the group soon split up amid internal wrangling and legal disputes.

The band members insisted for years that they would not get back together, but Squire said he and Brown had met recently at the funeral of bass player Gary 'Mani' Mounfield's mother and "in some ways it felt like 15 years ago was yesterday."

The band's blend of rock, pop, psychedelia and dance influences made it one of the biggest acts to emerge from the 'Madchester' scene in the late '80s and early '90s in and around the northwest England city of Manchester.'

From the Guardian

'The Manchester foursome sang beautiful songs about infatuation, insurrection and the monarchy, inspired bands from Oasis to the Beta Band and changed the lives of ordinary fans. When they granted this unknown kid an interview that produced the Best Band On The Planet cover story of my Avanti! fanzine, it sold thousands around the world and gave me a major break in journalism. At their second Leeds gig of 1989 I met a girl who was with me for 17 years, but the band themselves began a very public crumble. A career-damaging hiatus ended in 1994 with the flawed but still powerful Second Coming, but band members gradually decided they weren't feeling it any more, and it felt wrong to pretend otherwise. Behind the Manchester ruffian image, they were conscientious people.

And now? None of them can need the money that much for them to risk the enduring love they inspire by blowing it again. With the Squire-Brown friendship rekindled and Reni back on drums and backing vocals, they have a point to prove: that a Third Coming can be done with dignity, and that the once-mighty Stone Roses can be The Best Band On The Planet once again.'

Chris Cornell Auckland Set List NZ

What: Chris Cornell Set List
Where: ASB Theatre in Auckland, New Zealand
When: Tuesday, October, 2011

This was the first of two show's in Auckland, following a popular set in Wellington

Here's some notes on Cornell's solo set as reported by Chris Schulz from the Herald

"He sure looked lonely up there, but the fans packed into the ASB Theatre gave Cornell a rapturous welcome as he launched into a set full of hits, B-sides, soundtrack singles and covers that showed off his influences.

There was also room for the Beatles' Ticket to Ride, his single for the Bond film Casino Royal, newbie 'Cleaning the Gun' and even a couple of Mother Love Bone and Temple of the Dog songs.

But Cornell was in an accommodating mood, taking requests like a grunge jukebox and even performing Outshined acoustically for the first time."

Chris' Auckland Set List - Not sure where, but the Chris's first ever acoustic version of Outshined was played somewhere.... this list is from a photo of the actual set - he may have changed it up. It's a very different set list from the Wellington show.

Cornell Auckland Set List:
