U2 to play Glastonbury (again!)

Irish rockers U2 will perform at the Glastonbury music festival this year, joining Britain's Coldplay and US singer Beyonce as the main headline acts.

The band had to cancel their scheduled appearance at one of the world's biggest outdoor music events last year when lead singer Bono injured his back.

U2 will play the Pyramid stage, which can be seen by tens of thousands of fans standing on a grassy slope, on Friday, June 24.

"After the disappointment of U2 being unable to play last year, we're now doubly excited at the prospect of the Friday night supergroup breaking the sound barrier," said Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis.

U2 guitarist the Edge added: "It's more a way of life than a festival. I made it last year to the Friday show - got to play with Muse, got to hang out, ate a veggie burger and fries, and got to play on the Pyramid Stage.

"I have to say there is something really special and iconic about that stage. So we're all looking forward to coming back to pick up where I left off. And we're so excited to get to play in front of the world's greatest festival audience."

Eavis, an English dairy farmer now in his 70s, has developed Glastonbury from a small, free music festival into a major event in the pop calendar attracting some of the biggest acts and around 150,000 paying fans living on site in tents.

The Edge actually did play with Muse last year as they teamed up for a version of Where the Streets Have No Name.

U2 Johannesberg Set List 2011

U2 Johannesberg Set List 2011 South Africa

Venue: FNB Stadium

Opening Act(s): Amadou & Mariam, Springbok Nude Girls

Main Set: Beautiful Day, I Will Follow, Get On Your Boots, Magnificent, Mysterious Ways, Elevation, Until the End of the World, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, North Star, Pride, In A Little While, Miss Sarajevo, City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo, I'll Go Crazy (remix), Sunday Bloody Sunday, Scarlet, Walk On - You'll Never Walk Alone

Encore(s): One, Amazing Grace - Where the Streets Have No Name, Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me, With or Without You, Moment of Surrender

Comments: Instead of Space Oddity, U2 takes the stage to a Get On Your Boots remix (Soweto Gospel Choir version), then starts the show with Beautiful Day. Legendary South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela joins the band during I Still Haven't Found. But the night belongs to Nelson Mandela on the 21st anniversary of his first public rally after being released. Pride includes a videotaped speech by Mandela, and several other mentions include Bono dedicating Moment of Surrender to him. In light of recent news, the video screen shows images of Egypt and Tunisia during Sunday Bloody Sunday. The band performs Scarlet, but Bono talks over the song instead of singing 'rejoice'

U2 Cape Town South Africa Set List

U2 Set List Cape Town South Africa 2011

After last year's popular tour of New Zealand and Australia, U2 have started their tour in South Africa. After a show in Johannesburg, U2 played a special set list in Cape Town, South Africa.

Africa has long held a place in Bono's heart, and songs like Where the Streets Have No Name were inspired directly buy his charity work in the early 1980s. Like Bob Geldolf, Bono and U2 have never stopped campaigning to reduce third world debt so playing a gig in SA is probably full of real meaning for the band.

Yvonne Chaka Chaka guested vocals on Stand By Me and ISHFWILF.

Set List: Beautiful Day, I Will Follow, Get On Your Boots, Magnificent, Mysterious Ways, Elevation, Until the End of the World - Anthem, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Stand By Me, North Star, Pride, In a Little While, Miss Sarajevo, City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo, I'll Go Crazy (remix) - Relax - Two Tribes, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Scarlet, Walk On - You'll Never Walk Alone

Encore(s): One, Amazing Grace - Where the Streets Have No Name, Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me, With or Without You, Moment of Surrender

U2 played the following set list on February 18, 2011 at Cape Town's Stadium. The opening acts were 'Amadou & Mariam' and the amusingly named 'Springbok Nude Girls'

Sauce: U2 Tours who noted of the pre recording "before Blinding Lights includes a bit of Fez-Being Born with the 'What do you want?' line from Zooropa."

U2 didn't make any mention about Songs of Ascent.... is it gonna happen?

Super Bowl Set List: Black Eyed Peas

Looked liked Fergie dressed herself in the dark this morning?

Black Eyed Peas Super Bowl Set List 2011

Every year America's Super Bowl gets bigger and bigger. The game stays the same but the tv adds get as much attention as the quarterback. But it's the half time show where the hype comes into it's own. These things have got so big even the Simpson's TV showed decided to ape it a few years back. Let's not forget too, the hysteria that happened when Janet Jackson shared her nippples with the world!

Artists who've performed include Tom Petty, Rolling Stones, U2Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, The Who, Prince-  all artists with a high quality of artistry. So this year the Super bowl organisers went for quantity given the number of hits the Black Eyed Peas have had in the last decade.

Black Eyed Peas Superbowl Set list:

John Mellencamp Set List Lowell, Massachusetts

John Mellencamp Lowell, Massachusetts Set List

John Mellencamp began a 33 leg tour of the United States in Lowell, Massachusetts with a set list full of re worked classics and songs from long ago. Mellencamp said to Rolling Stone, "If you're coming to hear the greatest hits, don't even come!" Tired of playing all the crowd pleasers, he's focusing on playing what he wants to play. The show starts with the old cougar playing some stripped back solo versions of his songs before the band joins for the last half of the set - it did a include a few classics though!

Instead of a warm up act, Mellencamp screenings a documentary called "It's About You" which was filmed touring on the road during his tour with Bob Dylan in 2009.

Mellencamp Set List:

Authority Song
No One Cares About Me
Death Letter
John Cockers
Walk Tall
West End
Check it Out
Save Some time to Dream
Cherry Bomb
Delia
Don’t Need This Body
Right Behind Me
Jackie Brown
Longest Days
Easter Eve
Jack and Diane
Small Town
Scarecrow
Paper in Fire
The Real Life
What If I came Knocking
If I Die Sudden
No Better Than This
Pink Houses
Rock In The USA
She's So Tough

I think you'd agree this is a very different set list from Mellencamp's 2008 tour!

If you are just getting into Mellencamp, I reckon his Greatest Hits album is a good place to start.

White Stripes Break Up Press Release

The White Stripes have announced they have broken up. Sad Face.

White Stripes Break Up Press Release:

The White Stripes would like to announce that today, February 2nd, 2011, their band has officially ended and will make no further new recordings of perform live.

The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health.

It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.

Meg and Jack want to thank every one of their fans and admirers for the incredible support they have given throughout the 13 year plus years of The White Stripes' intense and incredible career.

Third Man Records will continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings from The White Stripes in their Vault subscription record club, as well as through regular channels.

Both Meg and Jack hope this decision isn't met with sorrow by their fans but that it is seen as a positive move done out of respect for the art and music that the band has created. It is also done with the utmost respect to those fans who've shared in those creations, with their feelings considered greatly.

With that in mind the band have this to say:

"The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if you want it to. Thank you for sharing the experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful."

Sincerely,
Meg and Jack White
The White Stipes

I guess sales of Elephant will briefly surge today?
