Mike Mills chats about Collapse Into Now

Is it me or is Micheal beginning to look like Billy Joel?

Here's a sweet article from Rolling Stone Magazine in which Mike Mills has a wee chat about the up coming R.E.M. album, Collapse Into Now.

When R.E.M. began recording Collapse Into Now last year they decided to throw out the beer making guidelines they imposed on their last album, 2008's Accelerate. "On the last one we tried to make everything focused, short, fast and sharp," Mike Mills tells Rolling Stone. "We took most of the rules off this time, picking the best songs regardless of whether they were fast, slow or mid-tempo."

The disc, which is due out early next year, reminds Mills of the band's 1992 classic Automatic For The People. "The songs go from one type into another really easily and it all seems to fit as a piece," Mills says. "It makes sense as a whole the same way that Automatic For The People did."

Produced by Jacknife Lee, the disc was recorded over the past year at studios in Portland, New Orleans, Nashville and at Berlin's legendary Hansa Tonstudio—where David Bowie and Iggy Pop recorded The Idiot and later where U2 cut Achtung Baby. "There's so many, not exactly ghosts...but vibrations in there," says Mills. "It's as very, very vibey place."

While in Berlin the band met up with longtime friend Patti Smith, who contributed vocals to the track "Blue." "Patti totally changed the song and added a whole other dimension to it," says Mills. "It was a powerful thing to watch." Another track, "It Happened Today," featured vocal contributions from Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam

The songs are also less political than the material on Accelerate. "It's more of a personal record than a political one," says Mills. "Current events do come into our mind when we write, but the themes here are more universal."

Other songs include the piano ballad "Walk It Back," a rocker called "All The Best" that features Mills and Michael Stipe sharing lead vocals and "Everyday Is Yours To Win"—which Mills describes as a "slow, beautiful song built around a guitar riff."

Mills says the group didn't always see eye-to-eye while recording the disc. "This one certainly has its share of difficulty—but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing," he says. "It just means you have creative tension, which is what happens when three strong-willed people manage to find a consensus."

U2 Sydney Show Night Two Set List

U2 Sydney Show Night Two Set List

December 14, 2010 at Sydney, Australia

Venue: ANZ Bank Stadium

Opening Act: Mr Beyonce Knowles

Comments from U2 Tours on the show: Bono reminisces during the show about U2's past times in Sydney, from premiering The Unforgettable Fire tour here to the Zoo TV worldwide broadcast and the famous show that Adam missed in 1993 -- a show that prompted him to change his personal habits. 'Adam Clayton version 2.0 started here in Sydney,' Bono says. He also recalls the Lovetown Tour as the band plays a pair of Rattle and Hum songs. All I Want Is You is played for the first time since Hawaii in 2006, and Love Rescue Me for the first time since Rotterdam in 1990.  Both songs were treats from Rattle and Hum.

Bon Jovi Set List Wellington New Zealand

Bon Jovi Wellington New Zealand Set List and Review

December 4 2010, Westpac Trust Stadium - Known as the Cake Tin to us locals!

What a month or so for Jimmy Jangles - seeing Rocky Horror Picture Show, U2 and now Bon Jovi!

Bon Jovi headed back to the Land of the Long White Cloud and this time heading for Wellington's Cake Tin Stadium. They played a fair selection of classic hits, album tracks and songs from The Circle. I was stoked to finally hear Bad Medicine and Faith which featured extended playing by Richie. Awesome.

Jon's teeth are so white and bright I swear that if he keeps smiling as much as he does, he's gonna be responsible for increased global warning!

Bon Jovi have many crowd pleasing songs to throw into the set list and classics like You Give Love a Bad Name, Bad Medicine and It's My Life were huge sing-alongs in the set, amongst others.

All in all, Bon Jovi, came to Wellington, played a gangbusters set and rocked the Cake Tin like it hasn't been rocked in a a while. Not since David Bowie played there maybe....

Opening Act was Black River Drive. No one cared.

Here's the Set List:

U2 Melbourne Set List 2010

These fans got lucky
U2 Setlist: Melbourne, Australia

December 01, 2010

A few days rest after the Auckland shows U2 return to Melbourne for the first time since 2006. U2.com reports "Edge and Bono opened the show from the b-stage tonight, coming round to meet during The Return of the Stingray Guitar. 'G'day!' said Bono, slipping effortlessly into the local language, and with that came the opening bars of Beautiful Day and it all kicked off."

Set List of U2:

Return of the Stingray Guitar, Beautiful Day - Here Comes the Sun, I Will Follow, Get On Your Boots, Magnificent, Mysterious Ways - My Sweet Lord, Elevation, Until the End of the World - Anthem, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Mercy, Bad, In A Little While, Miss Sarajevo, City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo - Highway to Hell - Devil Inside, Funky Town - I'll Go Crazy (remix) - Relax - Two Tribes, Sunday Bloody Sunday - Get Up Stand Up, Scarlet, Walk On - You'll Never Walk Alone

Set List Encore:

One, Amazing Grace - Where the Streets Have No Name,

Set Encore Two:

Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me, With or Without You, Moment of Surrender

Comments by U2Tours:

Bono starts the show by mentioning a couple times how great it is to be in Melbourne. (When U2 played its most recent show here in 2006, Edge mistakenly said thanks to Sydney when leaving the stage.) Jay-Z joins the band and raps during Sunday Bloody Sunday, just as he did at the first Auckland show, but does not stay on stage for Scarlet. Edge struggles through some guitar difficulties during the show, sometimes having to ditch his wireless setup for an old-fashioned wired guitar in the middle of songs.

The Top 10 Controversial Songs

The UK-based Performing Right Society (PRS) has conducted a poll into what most people think are the most controversial songs. It's a pretty standard list to be honest...... it's amusing how some of these songs have been massive hits and they are so common place these days.

Indeed, every teenage kid listens to Killing In the Name Of and heck, when I saw U2 play two nights ago, the mighty Jay-Z sampled Smack My Bitch Up.

Top 10 Most Controversial Songs:

1. Smack My Bitch Up - The Prodigy
2. God Save The Queen - The Sex Pistols
3. Relax - Frankie Goes To Hollywood
4. Kim - Eminem
5. Killing In The Name - Rage Against The Machine
6. Ebeneezer Goode - The Shamen
7. Suicide Solution - Ozzy Osbourne
8. Get Your Gunn - Marilyn Manson
9. Angel of Death - Slayer
10. Dear God - XTC

Clearly this was a British list.... where's GNR's One in a Million? Anything by Prince and did the Brits forget their own punk legend's Anti-Nowhere League's song So What??

Auckland Set List U2 Night Two

Auckland Set List U2 Night Two 2010

Friday 26 November

Last night's U2 set list meant for a pretty awesome U2 show, the lads backed up again with a full on night two set list. Highlights included the addition of Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me to the set, always a threatening song on the CD, live, it is a dangerous, sexual beast!

I think it was during GOYB that Bono though in some limes from Crowded House's Don't Dream Its Over.

U2 also again played The Johsua Tree and dedicated it to the miners of the Pike Mine.

There was a classic bit during Mysterious Ways where The Edge's effects did not work properly at the sound. As I was seated behind him, I could see him hit a pedal but that didn't work, he then actually flipped his guitar up to have a look and then then finally the guitar started proper - all the the while the band played on.

The I'll Go Crazy Remix grew on on me a little bit but it's still definitely a low point of the show.

Wifey and I were stoked Bono sang a wee bit of Unchained Melody as we danced to the U2 version at our Wedding.

Auckland Night Two Set List - Night One Set List Here

Return of the Stingray Guitar, Beautiful Day, New Year's Day, Get On Your Boots, Magnificent, Mysterious Ways, Elevation, Until the End of the World. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - Movin' On Up, One Tree Hill, Angel Of Harlem - Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, In A Little While, Miss Sarajevo, City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo, Relax - I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight (remix) - Two Tribes, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Scarlet, Walk On - You'll Never Walk Alone

Encore(s): One, Unchained Melody - Where the Streets Have No Name

Set Encore 2: Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me (lyrics), With or Without You, Moment of Surrender

U2 Auckland Set List 360 Degree Tour

This was the Claw during Jay_Z's performance

U2 Auckland Set List 360 Degree Tour Night One

U2 last played a set in New Zealand in 2006 - lucky fans got treated by U2 over two nights to special NZ only versions of One Tree Hill, one of the classic tracks from The Joshua Tree.

This time round U2 diehards were not disappointed as U2 played the song again as part of a set list full of classic U2 songs. A poignant moment in the show, it was dedicated to the miners that died in the Pike Mine tragedy. A list of the 29 miners who died was displayed on the big, wondrous screen.

U2's lengthy rehearsal on Tuesday night included Mercy, Boy Falls from the Sky, and Miss Sarajevo.

What a night, U2 sent us into outer space indeed. Personal highlights were the piano based version of Miss Sarejevo with Edge on keys duty, I Still Haven't Found, End of the World and Kiwi favourite, One Tree Hill.

After opening the night, Jay-Z came out and rapped some bollocks on Sunday Bloody Sunday which was awesome.

I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight (remix) is simply crap and I looked around during the song and the fans were dying out there. It's the only low point in the set list. Bono threw in some of Crowded House's Fall at Your Feet during an epic Walk On (I think it was that one!).

U2 in full song

And we got to hear Scarlet - U2 Tours says this is the first time U2 have played this song in a set since September 3, 1981 during a BBC radio show. They did it with Jay-Z did some rapping on it too - I wonder how many Kiwi's knew they were getting a special treat there!

U2 Auckland Set List: Night One

Return of the Stingray Guitar, Beautiful Day, I Will Follow, Get On Your Boots, Magnificent, Mysterious Ways, Elevation, Until the End of the World, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, One Tree Hill, Pride, In A Little While, Miss Sarajevo, City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo, I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight (remix) - Relax - Two Tribes, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Scarlet, Walk On - You'll Never Walk Alone

Set Encore 1: One, Amazing Grace - Where the Streets Have No Name, Ultraviolet (Light My Way)
Encore 2: With or Without You, Moment of Surrender

Night Two of U2's New Zooland Set List.
