U2 Set List Berlin Wall Coming Down Celebration

U2 Set List Berlin Wall Coming Down 20th Year Celebration

Following the massive success of U2's youtube concert, U2  performed a celebration gig in front of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

When: November 5th 2009
Why: Walls can fall
How: Drums, Guitar and Bass, Bono's vox
What: The Wall Set List: One, Magnificent, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Beautiful Day - Blackbird, Vertigo, Moment of Surrender

Noel Gallagher's Biggest Fan, Jay-Z joined in on Sunday Bloody Sunday and des a rap that morphed into a snippet of 'Get Up Stand Up.'

Here's a snippet from an interview I found of Bono being interviewed where he mentions the Berlin Wall:

ANDREW DENTON: You know what a deliberate construct it is to be a rock star, how much more of a construct do you have to have lead your country, to be a Gorbachev or a Bush?

BONO: I don't know. I just thought, there's this man who really personally dismantled the Berlin Wall and pulled back the Iron Curtain, and maybe the reason I think about Gorbachev a lot and his constructions is because as I grew up in the '70s and '80s in Europe, the Iron Curtain was always going to be there. There was never a thought that one day it wouldn't. And so I use that in my own mind to think about things that we accept as givens.

• Annie Lennox joins Aretha Franklin for “Chain of Fools” wearing a maroon felt hat and a T-shirt with a prominent message: “HIV Positive” reads the front; “Fighting HIV/AIDS” is emblazoned on the back. The song is so successful, Franklin gushes, “That was so good” and does little dance.
• Lenny Kravitz blows the crowd away with an amazingly soulful take on his verses of “Think.” Aretha starts to dance off on Lenny’s arm, but it’s just a psych-out. She’s back for a sizzling “Respect.”
• Jeff Beck opens with an homage to Ray Charles: “Drown In My Own Tears.” He wraps with a tribute to the Beatles, laying down a gorgeous, drawn-out “A Day in the Life” that stuns the crowd.
• Beck also brings out the two most spectacularly bearded men in the building: Sting sings “People Get Ready,” Billy Gibbons lends his gravely pipes to “Foxy Lady.” The non-bearded Buddy Guy joins for “Let Me Love You Baby,” and the crowd is mesmerized by Tal Wilkenfeld, Beck’s killer bassist.
• Metallica’s James Hetfield gets the crowd head-banging and laughing when he introduces Bob Seger’s “Turn the Page” as “one of the songs I wish we would have wroted — and thank my English teacher right now — I wish we had written.”
• The room fills with boisterous “Lllllllouuuus” as Lou Reed joins the band for searing versions of “Sweet Jane” and “White Light/White Heat.”
• Hetfield introduces “the crazy guy who epitomizes the rock & roll singer.” Ozzy Osbourne’s first words: “I can’t fucking hear! Louder!” Metallica bring the noise for “Iron Man” and Paranoid,” injecting the Black Sabbath songs with serious adrenaline.
• “We got completely schooled on early, early riff rock by this man and his band, the Kinks,” Hetfield says, introducing “one of the original punks,” Ray Davies. Enter powerful renditions of “You Really Got Me” and “All Day and All of the Night.” Metallica cap the set with “Enter Sandman.”
• Weeks on the road with the 360° Tour have given U2’s “Magnificent” an airy charm that stands up to some of their biggest hits. The song is resplendent and resonate in MSG.
• The crowd explodes when Bono utters the following: “This is the song we wish we’d written. It’s a Bruce Springteen song so we’d like to ask him to come out here. It’s also a Patti Smith song, we’d like to ask her to come out here.” After flubbing the beginning of “Because the Night,” the crew run through it again, tripling up on vocals on the chorus.
• Bono intros “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” with a long speech: “Here in rock & roll’s great cathedral, Madison Square Garden, think about all the pilgrims and pioneers that got us all here, the saints and the heretics, the poets and the punks that now make up the Hall of Fame. It’s a dangerous thing, this business of building idols, but at least, rock & roll is not at its best about worshiping sacred cows. It’s about thousands of voices gathered at once in a great unwashed congregation, like tonight. For a lot of us here, rock & roll means just one word: liberation. Political, sexual, spiritual liberation.”
Bruce Springsteen responds: “Let’s have some fun with that.”
• The night’s second-biggest surprise arrives when “Mysterious Ways” suddenly takes a left turn into the Black Eyed Peas’ “Where Is the Love.” It’s wacky to see Bono trading verses with Will.i.am, but as he recently told RS, he’s open to all kinds of musical experiences.
• The night’s biggest surprise arrives when Mick Jagger strolls onstage to the haunting beginnings of “Gimme Shelter.” Fergie nails the high parts at the end, and she and the Rolling Stones’ leader sing face to fact, hopping up and down with pure energy. At the track’s end, all Bono can say is, “Oh my God.”
• Jagger stays for “Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of,” trading verses with Bono in a moment of mutual respect. U2 bring it home with “Beautiful Day”: awesome, inspiring and tight.

Extra for Experts: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was established 25 years ago by legendary record executive Ahmet Ertegun and a group of music business executives to honor the artists that have defined rock and roll. Led Zeppelin's reunion gig was in Ahmet's honour.

U2 Hall Fame Concert Set List

U2 Rock and Roll Hall Fame Concert Set List

October 29th 2009

U2 played the following songs as part of the 25th Anniversary Show for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame celebrations:

U2 Hall of Fame Set List: Vertigo, Magnificent, Because the Night, Because the Night, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Mysterious Ways - Where Is The Love - One, Gimme Shelter, Stuck In A Moment, Beautiful Day

Comments: U2 performs at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary concerts. Because The Night is done with Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith. But the first try is a wreck, so they do it again and then redo the intro a third time. Springsteen stays on stage for  I Still Haven't Found. Black Eyed Peas join U2 for the Mysterious Ways - Where Is the Love combo, which includes a bit of One. Mick Jagger  of the Rolling Stones and Fergie from BEP sing Gimme Shelter, practically with U2 as their backing band. Jagger stays on to duet with Bono on Stuck In a Moment. Though U2 are given a one-hour slot and said to have 12 songs planned, their set is shorter. A setlist distributed before the show says U2 will play for 41 minutes (the actual time is longer due to the Because The Night redo).

U2 Los Angeles Set List from the Rose Bowl

bono live u2 rose bowl los angelese

U2 Rose Bowl, Hollywood Set List Los Angeles California

The show was played live across the internet via U2's Youtube channel to a gagillion people. The filming will also be turned into a new live DVD as well.

26th October 2010

The gig was also apparently the biggest ever at the Rose Bowl stadium.

Celebrity Train spotting - Danny Devito, Stewart Copeland (Police) Paris Hilton (One Night in Paris), Dave Stewart (Eyrthmics), Alyssa Milano, Cindy Crawford, and Brosnan, Pierce Brosnan. Bono did a shout out to famed astronaut Buzz Aldrin who was also present. Bono also wished The Edge's son, Levi, a happy birthday.

Bono called The Edge a 'Zen Presbyterian' and Adam, Clark Gable as he was often gone with the wind...

The Black Eyed Peas opening set was notable for GNR / Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash turning up to play a wild version of Sweet Child of Mine.

U2 Los Angeles Rose Bowl Set List: Breathe, Get On Your Boots, Magnificent, Mysterious Ways, Beautiful Day (with a few lines from In God's Country, God Only Knows and The Maker - which is a song by U2's producer Daniel Lanois), I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (The Edge played it with a capo on the 2nd fret, coda of Stand By Me, massive crowd singalong), Stuck In A Moment (acoustic guitar version), No Line On The Horizon, Elevation, In A Little While (Bono changed the lyrics to say space travel turns him on, song finished with last verse spoken by an astronaut in the International Space Station), Unknown Caller, Until the End of the World (frenetic Edge solo), The Unforgettable Fire (Edge pulls double guitar and piano duties), City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo, I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight (stale remix version), Sunday Bloody Sunday, MLK (Martin Luther King tribute), Walk On (with Aung San Suu Kyi protesters on the stage wearing masks of her face, Never Walk Alone snippet at end).
Bono thanks LA, everyone on youtube.
Desmond Tutu recorded message urging us to all be one....
U2 Encore:
One, Amazing Grace (lead into) Where the Streets Have No Name, Ultraviolet (Light My Way), With or Without You, (Bono thanks a million people for their contribution to AIDS awareness and anti AIDS drug measures, he then asks everyone to turn on their cell phone lights to turn the stadium into the Milky Way) Moment of Surrender (lyrics)

Check out the licence plate in the picture....

I had some thoughts on the reasoning for why U2 shook up the internet.

U2 Las Vegas, Nevada Set List

U2 Whitney, Las Vegas Set List

Some where in the Nevada Desert a buried body was woken by the loudness of the U2 concert from the Sam Boyd Stadium in Whitney. The body was pretty happy about it as U2 played his favourite song, Viva Las Vegas.

Being Las Vegas you'd expected a few power players would turn up to see your favourite band play - so the one socialite to rule them all, Paris Hilton was there and twittered post showski:

"The U2 Concert was incredible!!! Bono rocks! Such a talent, inspiration and total Rock Star! Love him!"

Here's a picture Ms Hilton posted of herself and a friend:

paris hilton at u2 concert

As the slot machines paid out the pennies, U2 played out the following concert set list:

U2 Las Vegas Set List: Breathe, Get On Your Boots, Magnificent, Mysterious Ways, Beautiful Day - In God's Country - Fix You, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - Viva Las Vegas, Stuck In A Moment, No Line On The Horizon, Elevation, In A Little While, Unknown Caller, Until the End of the World, The Unforgettable Fire, City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo - All These Things That I've Done, I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight (still with the stupid remix), Sunday Bloody Sunday, MLK (Martin Luther King), Walk On - You'll Never Walk Alone

U2 Encore: One, Amazing Grace, Where the Streets Have No Name, Ultraviolet, With or Without You, Moment of Surrender

Kiwi fans might be amused to know the Sam Boyd Stadium has hosted IRB Rugby Sevens Tournament matches there in the past. Also trainspotters might be amused to note that U2 kicked of the Popmart tour at this venue in 1997. For all these things that I've done indeed!

Source: U2Tours. These guys seriously work hard!

Guns N Rose's Set List Winnipeg, Canada

Guns N Rose's Set List Winnipeg, Canada

January 13th 2010

13 is unlucky for some but not loyal GNR fans as they packed in to Winnipeg's MTS Centre to hear Axl Rose and his covers band play a fair mix of '92 era GNR and to hear Axl's new GNR play some of the terrific tracks that were released on Chinese Democracy.

This show was GNR's first official fan gig in Canada / USA since the release of Chinese Democracy. Axl and co really fucked up the promotion of that album - limited interviews and no promo videos meant that only the die hards were really exposed to the album. Here's hoping this this tour might breath new life into the album.

Guns 'N Roses Set List:
